The CVCA Lady Royals varsity basketball team completed the season with a record
of 14 wins and seven loses. Additionally, the Lady Royals finished second in the PAC for the second straight year with a league record of eight wins and four loses. Five of the Royals’ seven loses were by deficits of five points or less. The young team continued to improve throughout the season, winning nine of the final 11 regular-season games before falling in a sectional final tournament game to second-ranked Orville, 42-40 at the buzzer.
The 2007-2008 Lady Royals were led by captains Tamara Lewis (senior) and Alyssa Presley (junior). Lewis, a three-time letter winner in basketball, provided leadership to an otherwise young Royals’ team. A first-team PAC 7 player, Tamara led the Royals in rebounds her junior and senior years. As the team’s only Senior, the Royals will certainly miss her presence next year.
Returning to next year’s squad will be first-team PAC 7 players Alyssa Presley (junior),Melissa Knepper (junior), Jeanette Pettigrew (junior), and PAC 7 honorable-mention player Julia Rothenbuhler (junior). Other letter winners contributing outstanding effort and play for this year’s team included Jessica Glenn (junior), two-year letter winner Victoria Risenhoover (junior), Turea Moore (sophomore), two-year letter winner Breanna Hopkins (sophomore), and Allison McFarren (sophomore).
Thanks and congratulations to Coach Vince Curry and the junior varsity team on a very successful season, winning 18 games and losing only two. Eleni Miller (freshman) led the team as the top scorer. Leading the team in rebounds, Allison McFarren and Katie Defer contributed strong play to the team’s success. The future of Lady Royals basketball looks very promising. Thank you as well to the coaches Jim Gillespie, Elyse Bogusz, and stat man Al Yarmesch for the work they put into making the Lady Royals basketball program thrive. It is truly a blessing that the Lord has given me to be associated with these wonderful young women, coaches, and parents.
